  2. Mayo. He studied art in Paris 1870, and
  3. published two volumes of poetry there. His
  4. first novel, A Modern Lover 1883, was
  5. sexually frank for its time and banned in
  6. some quarters. It was followed by others,
  7. including Esther Waters 1894.
